Upcoming series at Collier County Museum - FREE

Once again Collier County Museum is offering a weekly educational series, every Wednesday at 2pm for the rest of the summer, open to the public and FREE. There will be lectures/discussions/questions-and-answers on various subjects, held in the comfortably air-conditioned Exhibit Hall. July 29: Comets: Strange Visitors from Outer Space. Enjoy a discussion of the different classes of comets and their highly elliptical orbits Comets have fascinated people for thousands of years.

August 5: Florida Snakes. Herpetologist Paul Allen has captured and studied Florida’s native snakes for most of his life. Learn of their habits and gain a new-found appreciation for their important place in nature.

August 12: Alligators, Turtles, Amphibians, and Reptiles of Florida. Paul Allen is back to present a new list of cold-blooded creatures that make Florida their home. Discover the difference between reptiles and amphibians and the answer that that age old question, why did the turtle cross the road?

August 19: Plume Hunting and Its Effect on Florida’s Wading Birds. From 1870 until 1910 more than 95% of Florida’s bird population was shot to harvest feathers for the millinery trade. Learn what contributed to both the disaster and the eventual rescue of Florida’s “plume birds”.

August 26: An Introduction to Geological Time. The plant Earth has hosted life for more than 2 billion years. Join in a look back at the major chapters in geological time.
